It's Searcy Clean-Up Day! Stop by, pitch in, and be a part of what makes Stephens....Stephens.

A Searcy Clean-Up Morning will take place at Searcy on Monday, May 10, so students can check out Searcy and make room selections on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
 
If you want to help with the clean-up (sweeping, mopping, dusting; no painting) wear your jeans to work, and show up at Searcy at 9am on Monday. I’m springing for pizza at noon, and we should be done by 1pm.
 
We will be doing additional repair work, maintenance and clean-up in Searcy over the summer, but this lets us get a head start!
 

Softball is life....and we did it again!

This just in from softball coach Pam Dodge...CONGRATULATIONS to the athletes who make us all so proud....

I am pleased to announce that 14 of our 16 softball players were named to the AMC Academic All-Conference Team!  The members include:

Along with this, Jessica McConnell was named to All-Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman!  She was 8th in field players in batting average, and 9th in the conference overall in batting average.  She will do great things for us in the future!
 
I am also pleased to announce that five of our athletes were also named as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes:

In order to qualify for this award, the students must have a G.P.A. of 3.5 and be in Junior standing academically.
 
Our team G.P.A. this year was a 3.45 and our G.P.A. of multi-sport athletes was 3.40.
 
Our girls really worked hard this year on the field and in the classroom!

The students and horses participating in the UPHA Chapter 5 horse show in Kansas City are off to a solid start . Last night, Buckwheat our new road pony, won the Amateur Road Pony Class. Senior Nicole Lawrence drove to beat a field of six. Lauren Sopel was second with Maggie in the Western Pleasure Class. Whitney Butler and Star were Second out of 6 in the Park Pleasure class. Sophomore Jenn Halverson rode Azul to a wonderful second place finish in the amateur Five Gaited class. Senior Jamie McDaniel and Who Needs Mama received a fifth place ribbon in a very competitive 3-gaited pleasure class. Count and Nicole Lawrence earned a second behind a well known Park horse and bested one that we formally had to placed above.
 
The results are very positive as our students are competing against professional trained horses and riders. Your support and enthusiasm for the equestrian competitions is much appreciated as the students strive to represent Stephens College in a professional manner.
 
We have 12 horses and 13 riders competing at this United Professional Horseman's Show. Today Kealyn Donnally, Hannah Sette and Lauren Sopel show. I will send more updates from the events  .

Work for Big Sisters: It's the job of a lifetime!

 

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri has received an AmeriCorps grant to build our capacity to serve more children in the next three years.  The proposal includes the hiring of three full-time AmeriCorps members and six college students.   

 

There will be three 1700 hour positions (September – August).  There is a living allowance of $11,800 for a year, health insurance, and an education award of $5,350 after the end of one year of service that can be used to pay off school loans or to pay for future education.  These positions will include recruiting and coordinating mentors and planning Big/Little match activities.

 

The quarter-time jobs for college students are 450 hour positions over nine months (September – May) or approximately 15 hours a week allowing for school breaks. There is a living allowance of $2,950 plus an Education Award of $2,950 at the end of the 450 hours of service.  These students will recruit on high school and college campuses and in the community and mentor in the schools.

 

We are still developing the job descriptions, but the target areas for recruitment on high school and local college campuses will be:

• Faith based organizations
• Sororities and Fraternities
• Students interested in outdoor activities
• High School students
• Students in general

She will send you information on how to go online to apply for the positions. We will go to training in the next few weeks so you probably won’t receive that information for a while until we learn it ourselves.  The exact date that the positions is not known yet, but it is likely when college starts the fall semester.

On April 15, our very own Stephens Life newspaper made the quantum leap from print to pixels, and we are now global, immediate, interactive and very, very wired.

It's also very well-designed, very current, and full of the kinds of features -- from RSS feeds to slideshows -- that make reading it a new and dynamic experience.

I've been around this process long enough to know that this kind of quality doesn't happen without incredible amounts of planning, energy, talent, long hours and hard work.  Congratulations -- and our thanks -- to all of our students and to their adviser, Emily Mead, for transforming Stephens Life from a product of the print era to an experience of the digital age.
